Trojan Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers (AVRE)The bulk of British military operations in Afghanistan are concentrated in central Helmand. But Royal Engineers have spent the past two months lending their awesome capabilities to Afghan and US forces clearing a key area of Kandahar province.

Since September, 5 Armoured Engineer Squadron, part of 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault), have provided close engineering support to the 2nd Battalion of the US Army's 502nd Regiment, and their partnered Afghan National Army kandak, in Kandahar's Zharay district.

Zharay district contains the Horn of Panjwai, an insurgent stronghold from where attacks on Kandahar City have been enabled and supported, and Sangsar, the Taleban's spiritual birthplace and former home of Mullah Omar. Under this effort, known as Operation HAMKARI - or as the soldiers call it "The Battle of Kandahar" - the intent has been to defeat insurgent elements and increase Afghan government influence across the area, as well as enable development west of Kandahar City.

FV510 Warrior is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) sent by the British Army. It was designed and built by the multinational firm GKN pl, and became fully operational with the British army in 1987. The helmet of the warrior is hardened aluminum alloy armor equipped with additional fixtures. This vehicle is equipped with infantry support to GKN Sankey two-man turret equipped with a 30 mm automatic gun L21A1 rard, who has the ability to destroy most modern armored vehicles at a maximum distance of 1,500 meters (1,600 m). The fighter is powered by a Perkins engine, Rolls-Royce V8 Condor diesel. Between 1987 and 1995, the British Army received 790 FV510 vehicles.

The warrior desployed in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, successful participation in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001-2002, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Only two warriors were destroyed during Operation Desert Storm, with nine soldiers killed in friendly fire incident when they were attacked by a U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt II, who had confused the British armored vehicle for enemy tanks, missile launches AGM-65 Maverick which hit the targets.

Challenger is a development of the Centurion line / Cacique, modified to produce the two Shir / Iran had originally planned for service with the Iranian forces. After the Iranian Revolution the Shir Iran 2 project was taken by the British army and the end result was later renamed Challenger 1 Challenger. The main differences between Challenger and its predecessor are the driving force chief of Challenger, producing 1,200 hp at 2,300 rpm, much more powerful than the Chieftain engine, and the Chobham armor, which gives very high levels of protection against weapons tank.

The Challenger 1 has been in service with the British army since 1983. It was originally produced by Royal Ordnance Factory in Leeds, which was acquired by Vickers Defence Systems in 1986. It plans to begin withdrawing the Challenger service in 1998 and must be completely replaced by Challenger 2 in 2002. Challenger 1 took part in Operation Desert Storm where the Iraqi forces did not have a single vehicle out of combat while Challenger destroyed about 300 Iraqi tanks.
